Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip Guide 2026: Route Map, Cab Fares & Best Stops

By Samar Sonar ·

A road trip from Guwahati to Tawang is one of the most scenic and adventurous journeys in India. The route takes you from the Brahmaputra plains of Assam straight into the snow-capped Eastern Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh.

With the recently opened Sela Tunnel making travel to Tawang much safer and faster in winter, there has never been a better time to plan this road trip.

In this guide, I will share the exact route, current road conditions, latest taxi and cab fares for 2026, and the best spots to stop along the way.

Guwahati to Tawang Road Trip Summary

  • Total Distance: Approximately 450 km
  • Travel Time: 12 to 14 hours (minimum 2 days recommended)
  • Best Time to Visit: March to June (spring/summer) and October to November (clear autumn skies).
  • Permit Required: Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit (ILP); Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit (PAP).

While you can drive the 450 km in a single grueling 14-hour stretch, it is not recommended due to high altitude gains and winding mountain roads. Acclimatization is key to avoiding acute mountain sickness (AMS).

Day 1: Guwahati to Dirang (approx. 310 km — 8-9 hours)

  • Start early (around 6:00 AM) from Guwahati to beat the city traffic.
  • Cross the Assam border and enter Arunachal Pradesh at the Bhalukpong check gate (have your ILP printed and ready).
  • Drive along the scenic Kameng River through Tenga Valley and Bomdila.
  • Stay overnight in Dirang (which is at a comfortable lower altitude of 4,900 ft).

Day 2: Dirang to Tawang via Sela Tunnel (approx. 140 km — 5-6 hours)

  • Explore Dirang Valley (Sangti Valley, Dirang Dzong) in the morning.
  • Start the climb towards the Sela Pass region.
  • Pass through the Sela Tunnel (bypassing the dangerous, fog-heavy old pass heights).
  • Stop at Jaswant Garh War Memorial to pay respects to the 1962 war hero.
  • Reach Tawang by afternoon and acclimatize.

Day 3: Tawang Sightseeing

  • Explore Tawang Monastery, Bumla Pass (border), Madhuri Lake, and Tawang War Memorial.

Guwahati to Tawang Cab & Taxi Fares (2026 Estimates)

If you are not driving your own vehicle, hiring a local cab or taking a shared Sumo is the most common option.

1. Private Reserved Cabs (Round Trip / Multiple Days)

Hiring a private vehicle for the entire tour (Guwahati to Tawang and back, usually a 5 to 7-day plan) is the most comfortable option.

  • Innova / Scorpio / Bolero (SUV): ₹5,500 to ₹7,000 per day (includes driver charge, fuel, and state entry fees).
  • Swift Dzire / Etios (Sedan): ₹4,500 to ₹5,500 per day (not recommended if you plan to visit Bumla Pass, which requires high-clearance local vehicles).

2. Shared Cabs (One-Way)

For budget travelers, shared Tata Sumos run daily from Guwahati to Bomdila, Dirang, and Tawang.

  • Guwahati (Paltan Bazaar) to Tawang Shared Sumo: ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 per seat.
  • Tip: Shared Sumos start very early in the morning (around 5:30 AM). Book your ticket a day in advance at Paltan Bazaar.

Best Stops Along the Route

  1. Bhalukpong (Assam-Arunachal Border): Stop here for ILP verification and a quick breakfast by the Kameng River.
  2. Tipi Orchid Research Centre: Located just after Bhalukpong, home to over 500 species of exotic orchids.
  3. Bomdila Monastery: A beautiful Buddhist monastery offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.
  4. Dirang Dzong & Sangti Valley: A tranquil valley filled with kiwi orchards, sheep breeding farms, and traditional stone houses.
  5. Sela Tunnel & Sela Lake: An engineering marvel that makes year-round travel possible by bypassing landslide-prone heights.
  6. Nuranang Falls (Jang Falls): A massive 100-meter waterfall that is a spectacular sight for photos.

Essential Travel Tips for 2026

  • Sela Tunnel Update: The new tunnel has reduced travel time by about 1 hour and avoids the high-altitude ice/fog on Sela Pass. However, always check local weather updates before starting, as heavy snow in winter can still affect the approach roads.
  • Bumla Pass Permission: Note that your standard ILP does not cover Bumla Pass (China Border). You need to apply for a separate permit at Tawang through local operators, and only local Arunachal-registered SUVs are allowed to drive there.
  • Offline Maps: Internet connectivity is highly unreliable once you cross Bhalukpong. Download offline Google Maps for the entire Guwahati-Tawang stretch before leaving Guwahati.
